Jesse Josh

Jesse Josh Goje is a highly skilled visual artist and an original descendant of the creators of the ancient Nok civilization of sub-Saharan Africa, whose passion for figurative painting is evident in his unique and innovative technique. Born in Kaduna State on 6 March 1989, Jesse’s artistic journey began at a young age, sketching on his father’s A4 papers. As a self-taught artist, he has developed a deep love for using texture and the repository of Neo-Nok folklore to tell compelling stories that continue the legacy of the ancient Nok civilization. His career began with his popular graffiti and mural installations and the Hamlord series, which gained him recognition in the art world.

Over the years he has trained many young people through his youth-empowerment project, the Croccity Graffiti Masterclass. Jesse’s technique is characterised by his innovative use of the impasto method — mixing plaster of Paris with glue and acrylic or emulsion paints to create a distinct, impressionistic texture, then painting the surface again with gesso. His work is a testament to his dedication to preserving and celebrating the rich heritage of black culture.
